Look, I'm a big fan of techdirt and Mike Masnick and the biggest reason I have a bluesky account is because of him, but I gotta say the tiktok takes seem off the mark here.
I feel like if it was 1975 in the height of the cold war, I would be appalled if Mike et al were arguing that the USSR should be allowed to own CBS. I think the reason that it was unanimous was because this wasn't a free speech case at all. It was a foreign adversary case. I think the fact that bytedance would rather have shut down the app rather than sell it, which they had like 2 years to do, shows that they gain some measure weaponization of the app against America.
I am honored to take 1st place in the funny category for this year. It made my night.
I would be interested to see what the vote totals were and how close it was.
Personally, I think it's the AI boyfriends that will be more popular. It seems more likely to me that women will be seeking AI boyfriends instead for an "emotional connection" that the men in their lives don't fulfill.
There seem to be a lot more stories around about women who are upset at the emotionally immature men in their life than men wishing they had more emotionally mature women.
So, I too think the laws are problematic and overbroad, but it's since come out that most of the authors of the "Porn isn't addictive" research are now currently found to be pretty cozy with the porn industry or relied on faulty studies. There have been a lot of new stuff out the last couple years showing how porn affects the brain.
There's a whole website setup with very detailed rebuttals of the same work your quoting.
What you should have done is post a very angry article here decrying it as a hit piece asking people to ignore it and see if you could have Streisand effect it to an even bigger audience.
I love how this actual data from Twitter/Elon saying he gives into government demands and yet his apologists here on techdirt are going to come in and complain instead that Masnick is Anti-Elon and this is really some 4D chess where Elon uses his compliance to the government to show that he is really all for stopping government overreach and that he will reveal his master plan to the faithful shortly.
I would love to see Matt (both of them) spin this news.
By that logic, any company that take government grants is then a government company. Like Tesla when it got Federal loans or when it got local incentives from several US states.
The obvious answer to your question is to look at what China & Russia does and compare it to America. NPR gets government grants but the US government doesn't tell them what to print and put out. NPR still has editorial discretion. Chinese/Russian Media prints what the government says when the government says.
It's important to note that disinformation doesn't just have to involve trying to change someone's mind. It could be done to reinforce existing views even after newer information came to light
So you could end up falling for disinformation that ends up reinforcing your POV instead of changing it.
Is there a way you can integrate tipping into the comment section? I would love to be able to like tip a dollar to techdirt for every person that has a great reply to Matt.
Matt seems like the kind of guy, who when asked to move out of the way so someone could pass, will start screaming that you are violating their personal space.
Then he will start to wonder when America got so fascist that a man can't stand in the doorway of a public space without being harassed.
Yeaaaah it’s not the harassment from musk that they’re worried about. It’s the harassment from his fanboys such as yourself who are routinely insulting people who don’t like musk.
Maybe your parents were so bad that you cycled back around to being reasonable.
Kind of like how some kids have abusive parents and make the conscious decision to break the cycle.
Dude,
That's like saying we should be happy for parents that take into the account of what all their children want before making a decision.
A good parent isn't one that continually changes whims without notice. A good parent explains their reasoning to their kids on why some things are happening. When parents start polling their kids for every decision, then they've given.
Should kids be given opinions on what affects the family? Yes.
Should they be given final say? No
Should parents be consistent and concise in what they are doing? Yes
I'm actually becoming more convinced that the people who think what Musk is doing is wild and crazy, are probably ones who had a good childhood with a healthy parenting relationship. Whereas all these others probably had parents that were more concerned with being their friend.
Big Fan

What’s the word for that?
I’m like 99% sure that there’s a word(s) that describes this scenario but it’s just not coming to me. Maybe Mike Masnick knows what I’m talking about?
Streisand?

I'm like 83% certain (and 100% grossed out) over the fact that Matthew Bennett probably got a boner reading that Judge's decision.

Guys, What if Matthew Bennet is Matt Taibbi?

I'm going to be honest, I actually read techdirt more cause of you.
Yeah it was a joke
That’s a feature not a bug!
