Federal Officers Arrest Two People Fighting A Wildfire In Washington Because Why Not

from the criminals-of-opportunity dept

You can’t do mass deportation without being indiscriminate. That’s how things are working out in Trump’s second term in office, with ICE, etc. entirely abandoning any pretense of just trying to rid this country of dangerous criminals who are here in the country illegally.

Raiding Home Deport parking lots to round up people just looking for work isn’t enough for ICE and Kristi Noem’s DHS. It’s not enough to hang out all day in court hallways just so officers can grab anyone voluntarily showing up for mandatory immigration check-ins.

A whole bunch of workers this same administration considered “essential” during its mishandling of the COVID pandemic are now considered entirely expendable. And that means things like this are just going to become more common as the government continues to run out of people that have committed any crime more serious than overstaying their (official) welcome.

Two people fighting the Bear Gulch fire on the Olympic Peninsula were arrested by federal law enforcement Wednesday, in a confrontation described by firefighters and depicted in photos and video.

Why the two firefighters were arrested is unclear. But a spokesperson for the Incident Management Team leading the firefighting response said the team was “aware of a Border Patrol operation on the fire,” that it was not interfering with the firefighting response and referred reporters to the Border Patrol station in Port Angeles.

Over three hours, federal agents demanded identification from the members of two private contractor crews. The crews were among the 400 people including firefighters deployed to fight the wildfire, the largest active blaze in Washington state.

CNN also covered this story, which finally led to the DHS delivering its official response from its seat at the local Nazi Bar:

The two illegal aliens apprehended were NOT firefighters. The two contracted work crews questioned on the day of their arrests were not even assigned to actively fight the fire; they were there in a support role, cutting logs into firewood. The firefighting response remained uninterrupted the entire time. No active firefighters were even questioned, and U.S. Border Patrol’s actions did not prevent or interfere with any personnel actively engaged in firefighting efforts.

The last sentence is mostly accurate. But to pretend this reporting is false simply because it refers to people involved in firefighting efforts (in this case, cutting up fallen trees) as “NOT firefighters” is being pedantic for no other reason than to attempt to own the libs. People put fuel in tanks and attach missiles to planes but no one pretends these people aren’t involved in “fighting wars” even though they’re not right out there on the front line catching bullets.

Under any normal administration, the optics of detaining a few dozen firefighters and arresting a couple of them for civil law violations would be enough to prevent this operation from moving forward. On top of that, a directive from none other than PRESIDENT TRUMP (and one that has not been officially rescinded) makes it clear immigration enforcement efforts are supposed to steer clear of situations like these:

Under Donald Trump’s first presidential administration, as wildfires ripped through northern California and burned over 300,000 acres in 2018, DHS said it would “suspend routine immigration enforcement operations in the areas affected by the fires,” except if a serious criminal presented a public safety threat. The agency also said it wouldn’t conduct any operations at evacuation sites or assistance centers.

“It is unclear if that stance has changed under Trump’s second administration,” CNN says, reporting on facts that make it clear that stance has indeed changed and that Trump’s second administration is more than willing to not only cripple firefighting crews, but rouse the rabble with “fake news” bullshit that serves no greater purpose than increasing the number of commenters and reposters who seem to believe the FCC has the power to either put CNN in jail or yank a broadcasting “license” it not only doesn’t possess, but is impossible to obtain because [for all the red hats in the back] THE FCC DOES NOT ISSUE BROADCAST LICENSES TO CABLE TV STATIONS.

But even if everything the DHS said on X is true (and there’s no reason to believe it is, especially when there are recordings of this entirely unnecessary “enforcement effort” that undercut the DHS narrative), it’s still fucking stupid. Why do this sort of thing at all when it’s going to generate far more negative press and animosity against the government than… I don’t know… looking for actual dangerous criminals and focusing your efforts on them?

The cruelty isn’t the point. The institution of some form of Christian white nationalism is. The cruelty is the juice. And as long as that’s still enough to get this administration hard (literally and/or figuratively), it will remain a crucial part of its efforts to rid this country of the people Trump and his followers believe never deserved to be here in the first place, no matter how much they contribute to a nation whose leaders have nothing but bigotry to offer in return.

As if you didn't need any further confirmation

Law enforcement would rather literally let this country burn than allow anyone who looks vaguely brown to stay.

Now do the part you left out, where the Forest Service cut the contracts to those crews because of a criminal investigation of the contractors, and the crews were escorted out of the fire zone

That’s why there was somebody to checking ID’s. Probably a bad
Idea to send the BP, and one of the people arrested had a UVisa. , so he shouldn’t have been arrested, but it wasn’t exactly a case of wandering racists passing by the crew and deciding to check ID’s for shits and giggles.

Nope..

Just the guy who’s tired of being embarrassed when his side falls for the clickbait as hard as Trump’s cultists do.

Or that’s the cover story being told. I’ll wait for more information from a reliable source or just take it with a grain of salt if no such source is available.

Snopes has it, so do other sites..it’s in the CPB’s statement on the matter It’s really not that hard to find, if you actually oh.. follow a developing news story rather than jump in to rage post at the social media clickbait initial reports.

It’s not like border patrol was just wandering around, spotted a fire crew and deiced to be assholes.

They were sent there.. now, the choice to send CPB, rather than state or local police.. poor..

And the bit that this clickbait rage over them checking ID skips, because you can’t be bothered to dig into the story, is that one of the guys arrested – wasn’t illegal- he had a U-Visa, becuase he was cooperating in a case against traffickers.

I haven’t rage-posted anything. If anything, you seem more rage-induced by this story than anyone else.

As for your claim, it sounds like you’re taking the CPB’s bullshit in good faith instead of being skeptical since they have every reason to lie in order to put out this publicity fire, pun intended.

Here’s what I found from another news organisation:

In a news release, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said its agents assisted with an investigation led by the federal Bureau of Land Management. While the agency’s release did not mention the nature of the investigation, multiple wildfire sources said the feds claimed they had uncovered fraud on time cards submitted by the crews.
[…]
Multiple wildfire veterans said that time card discrepancies are not uncommon at wildfires, where crews work long days and it’s not always clear if lunch breaks or errands in town count toward working hours. Such mix-ups are typically sorted out between organizational leaders. Calling law enforcement in such a scenario is almost unheard of.

“This is not the first time a crew has been called on the carpet for maybe padding their time a bit,” Duncan said. “You deal directly with the company. It’s just absolutely mind-boggling to treat it as a criminal issue.”

And here’s the kicker:

The Customs and Border Protection news release announcing the immigration arrests made no mention of time sheets or any evidence that the investigation had turned up fraud. It did state that the two companies whose crews were raided had their contracts terminated by the government.

Polhamus, with the fire contractors’ group, said that claim is false. While the crews were demobilized and sent home, the feds have not actually ended the companies’ contracts or ability to accept future deployments.

Huh, look at that. Law enforcement fabricated a reason to arrest immigrants. AGAIN.

I’ve managed to dig into that claim, and it seems the U-visas were applied for by that particular firefighter and his family after his arrest by CBP on the basis they committed a crime by arresting him, whereas the other had a previous order of removal against him and both were arrested on that basis.

If I may put it bluntly, bullshit. They literally walked into an active fire fight and started fucking with people. I don’t give a fuck what investigation you claim was going on. There’s a time and place and that ain’t fucking it.

Next up, Ice arrests man having heart attack along with the person performing cpr.

Ice agents are fucking evil, plain and simple. I have zero respect for anyone in ice or the national guard that does not walk away.

My only hope is every single ice agent gets treated exactly how they treat others.

Unfortunately, that would involve trafficking them to a torture center, and that’s one war crime Dems seem opposed to committing.

Anonymous Coward says:

"illegal aliens" isn't even right

  • At least one of the people has been in the US since the age of 4 and is in the middle of immigration proceedings to become a permanent resident.
  • People cutting up and removing fuel are absolutely essential in fighting wildland fires. The time and harassment the crew experienced was unnecessary, wasteful, and counterproductive
  • Usually these areas are restricted for safety reasons. So WTF were they even doing in there, potentially putting the agents as well as the crew in harm’s way near the edge of a fire.

They know who these people are. Like seriously, WTH wouldn’t you just wait for them to come home? Why not, oh I dunno, let them have their day in court, as the system intends.

As for the other point, about promising not to arrest people actively evacuating from a fire in 2018, obviously they won’t follow that policy going forward. Potentially it will get people killed, not just the ICE targets but first responders and other civilians who will be in more danger as a result. These days minutes count in wildfire response, and every moment of attention or delay in evacuation harms whole communities.

Anonymous Coward says:

I don’t get it, why the administration is not just blaming theses two illegal aliens for having spread the wildfire and threatening to send them in the middle of antarctic?

B Elliot says:

What about the other 42?

44 firefighters were lined up in the forest and told to present ID. All the reporting thus far is about the two who were taken away. Who made the 44 line up? Were they really made to stand in line? Who demanded their ID? What if they failed/refused to present it? Are you required to carry ID traipsing around fighting fires in forested Washington?

Nurses are involved in operating procedures as well but we don’t call them doctors or surgeons…

Stephen says:

Does anyone really expect jackbooted thugs routinely wearing masks to give a fuck if it looks bad to arrest people working to remove fire risks in a wildfire?

ICE agents are just Nazis now – what they care about is living out their racist fantasies. If they weren’t fascists they’d have quit in disgust by now

Spreading fear, disgust and hatred is kind of the point of their existence now

Tim gets delusional. Just look at their shoes and shirts. No firefighter would ever wear such a gear. Lie right there.

Beside, why is government subcontractor allowed to bring illegal aliens to work?

Every day we hear MSM spasms about poor “migrants”. Here is a sample:

“Lacey business owner abducted by ICE, according to online fundraiser”

Anonymous Coward says:

They weren’t actually “fighting the fire”, that was pure disinformation, but it wouldn’t matter if they were.

Were they here illegally? Yes, yes they were. Therefore they must be deported. Literally what the law says.

Anonymous Coward says:

Re:

They were preventing the fire from spreading.

Now point to the law where the government absolutely has to deport people who arrived here without authorization. Go ahead. Paste the text here.

Anonymous Coward says:

Re: Re:

Not the same AC, but I found the relevant legislation on this page:

Expedited Removal
Under expedited removal, ICE or U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) may remove certain aliens without a hearing if they:

are attempting to enter the United States (e.g., at an airport or intercepted at sea), or
entered or attempted to enter unlawfully within the past two years without inspection.
Aliens subject to expedited removal are not entitled to appeal, petition for a writ of habeas corpus, or to seek any other form of judicial review unless they claim:

U.S. citizenship
lawful permanent resident status
prior recognition as a refugee or asylee
a credible fear of persecution or torture
that they are minors
Absent such claims, removal may be executed without further proceedings.

Reinstatement of Removal
If an alien who was previously removed reenters the United States illegally, ICE or CBP may reinstate the prior removal order. No additional hearing is required, and the alien is ineligible for most forms of relief. However, if the alien expresses a fear of persecution or torture, they may seek withholding of removal under the Convention Against Torture or related statutes. Unlike asylum, withholding of removal only bars return to the specific country of feared harm; the alien may still be removed to another country.

I don’t know about one of the arrestees, but the other definitely qualified for reinstatement of removal according to the Snopes article about this case.

Anonymous Coward says:

Re: Re: Re:

OP claimed that the government has a legally mandated duty (“Therefore they must be deported. Literally what the law says”) to remove people who are illegally present in the US. I claimed that the government has no such mandated duty.

That Anonymous Coward (profile) says:

If the report I saw today is true its so much worse.

The higher ups dispatched firefighters not to fight a fire, but into an ICE shakedown.

https://coloradonewsline.com/2025/09/03/firefighters-washington-immigration-raid/

Because if I wanted firefighters to hate me, I would completely waste their time & piss them off by letting ICE take away people guilty of being brown at a raid I sent them into.

Anonymous Coward says:

According to the article you linked to, it wasn’t an ICE raid, but rather one undertaken by CBP, a related but different federal agency.
