Is The GPRS Honeymoon Over?

Over at O’Reilly, Brian Jepsen takes a look at the actual data rates that come through on GPRS and demonstrates how they’re (of course) no where near the promised “up to” (read: in absolutely perfect ideal laboratory settings if no one moves and the moon is in the right phase) speeds. He points out that with all the fanfare over Cingular’s EDGE launch you should expect data rates of approximately 75-135kbps. Not exactly blazing speed, but getting better. Of course, that only focuses on throughput – and as we’ve explained before that’s just one factor you need to pay attention to when discussing wireless connection “speeds”.
