Why not both? The hitlerjugend was infamous for recruiting the young, lost and hungry and churn the brainwashed thugs in droves out for the party. This isn't the first we've seen of morons trying to ban information off the internet. I'm fairly sure that she isn't going to be the one who succeeds. Bluntly put I'd actually say Tim's wrong this time. This is no less than 100% performative nonsense, with whatever legalese has been constructed around the religious edict she's trying to push either requiring a dozen outright constitutional violations to pull off or literally being impossible to execute. Of course, for someone trying to cater to the religious zealots and the fascist base I'm sure just trying to introduce the bill and publicly screaming about it has already accomplished everything she set out to do.
Fun is one way of describing it. "bloody terrifying" is another. The short story of "Melancholy Elephants" was frightening enough without trying to speed up the process described of copyrighting every possible combination of tones by automation.
"Maybe I don’t know people who are just that smart?" Sure you do. Well, at least you know of such people. Go google for *"Darwin Awards" and you'll find a great many of Musk's peers.
And "Bennet" seems to love the same troll rhetoric.
"Why is it always projection with you cultists?" Because whenever it comes to propaganda Goebbels old line of "Always accuse the other side of what you yourself are guilty" has been the go-to of the alt-right ever since their spiritual WW2-era predecessor made that line a success. Koby has come out swinging for the alt-right stormfront kids often enough for is to be obvious who he's carrying water for.
"The FTC is appearing powerless over Tiktok." The Federal Trade Commission? Powerless? Koby, in your time around here you managed to drop your credibility faster than literally anyone this side of actual Baghdad Bob through your persistent revisionism...but this one takes the cake. Twitter is in a binding agreement with the FTC. Twitter is about to default on that agreement. TikTok may be up to a great many shenanigans but insofar as any of those involve the actual FTC isn't clear. "...it would prove the incestuous relationship between government censorship and corporate corruption that tries to run cover for the politicians they favor." Uh, so the bill trying to outlaw TikTok in the US currently going through senate and congress with bipartisan support is what, smoke and mirrors?
I'd add this; A lot of the timelines the Twitter files concern turn out to be under the Trump administration. So what Bennett claims would mean the FBI was being extra naughty while Trump was in power. Something we libs tend to agree with. And yet he somehow fails to see why this isn't the 'gotcha' he was looking for as it doesn't really make his side look good. I know it's not wise to assume identity from rhetoric tells but I'm getting more convinced by the post that we're addressing our very own old Baghdad Bob/out_of_the_blue/Jhon smith risen from the ashes to haunt us from his umpteenth self-imposed exile.
"But I’m sorry that we like to deal in facts, not fantasy." Well, that in itself is, to the alt-right, an outright declaration of war.
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” - attributed to Joseph Goebbels. To the US "conservative", long used to using another of Goebbel's old maxims - lügenpresse to explain away the "fake news" pushed by the media, the presentation of factual reality is a threat. Always has been.
Myeah. It took a while for me to encounter the massive elephant in the american room which is the myth that the puritans were decent and oppressed people when the naked truth was that they were a sect of horrible asshats who felt compelled to go to the homes and houses of their neighbors and stand outside screaming that their pagan ways would make them BURN IN HELL. And once moved to the US it didn't take long. Being a non-puritan or non-christian was a death sentence in puritan lands. And not rarely a death which came at the end of truly medieval torture in a public spate of religious hysteria. The US puritan is best represented by the Westboro Baptist Church. Always was
It is, in fact, the CIA's definition of "self-coup" - where the holder of an office decides he'd rather not play according to the rules any longer and institutes a coup against his own government in order to be able to write his own rules. We've seen that plenty of times in south america. But I'm not too surprised that the toll currently calling himself Bennett doesn't know what he's talking about.
Well, to be fair, Russia today is most definitely not communist. Hasn't been since the USSR fell. Russia today is fascist - which, mind you, doesn't make republicans come off looking any better. I mean, picking Hitler and Mussolini over Stalin isn't exactly going for a high bar of acceptable... And no, most americans at least seem incredibly blind on the terms of leftwing, communism and socialism. Mainly because the US overton window is so far to the right even Reagan and Goldwater come off looking like raging leftists in comparison today. The democratic party has exactly two big figures who are nominally leftist - Bernie and AOC. Both of whom would be left-wing centrist anywhere else in the world. The rest of the democratic party would be hard right-wing in the rest of the world. The GOP has gone right off the scale.
Well...not quite true. In ancient Rome christianity was indeed suppressed in imperial times - understandable of any religion which teaches that the whole of mos maiorum, the empire, the senate, and every last deity of the roman pantheon was all so much bullshit as compared to the One True God... And Nero did in fact use a lot of christians in his games. To be fair though, it was more that they were easily accessible mainly non-citizens available for use as props in his shows. US christians, however, have ended up being a plague. Anything evangelical rooted in calvinism and puritanism brings nothing to mind so much as the original reason as to why the british crown eventually bribed that community with a one-way fully paid ticket to the new world. Puritans make horrible neighbors. They see it as their divine right to harm whoever does not cleave to their ways with a zeal even iranian theocrats can't match.
"That’s a major flaw in capitalism, because that greed undermines everything." Depends on your point of view. Arguably that's not a flaw but instead a feature of capitalism. Bear in mind that it's a system which relies on greed being the engine for everything. The point where capitalism becomes a problem is that just very few of the actual consumers relying on the capitalist system manage to make themselves libertarians willing to sell their grandmother to the soylent green factory for a quick buck. Capitalism works as intended. If we don't like the unavoidable outcome of relying on such a system alone we can always push for hybrid solutions like social democracy or democratic socialism instead where the naked greed of capitalism is curtailed.
That's not the Techdirt readership becoming communist. It's you and yours moving so far to the right even Reagan comes off looking like a leftist in comparison. But you do you.
Yes, well, one only needs to read that old Mussolini quote about how fascism should rather be called corporatism to realize that fascism is what every corporation in a leading position wants to operate under. No more pesky consumer protection, no more ethical guidelines. All that costly stuff just goes away.
Well, it's just my guess but I think it's because old Baghdad Bob (the turd by any other name) is a crazy asshole who likes to shout insults at people? ;)
Only goes to show that Real Stupidity beats Artificial Intelligence every day of the week when it comes to beating the competition. Meanwhile Musk seems to be finding out the hard way that "There is no cake. The cake is a lie".
Well, yes. My question was rhetorical. I know Mike's got better things to do than spend all day helming a banhammer. I just found Thad's comment to be very on the nose, given that Mike let slip the phrase "Even if you strongly believe in “free speech” (as I do), that doesn’t mean you want to allow crazy assholes screaming insults at guests in your house." I mean, I know I've been a bit quiet for some time here but I'm pretty sure I've seen good ole Baghdad Bob et. al. still being shouty for the alt-right and the copyright cult around here in very offensive "crazy asshole" behavior.
Unlikely. I guess that yeah, intel agencies no doubt want as much soft assets as possible including user data but...that's all open market stuff. The saudis can get that data the same way the chinese and russians can - by simply having a shell company buy the data in bulk. Twitter, TikTok, and other social platforms, simply aren't big assets on the intel front. Certainly not to the point where acquiring one for signals intelligence makes sense. What is far more likely is that owning the moderator's seat of Twitter - massive in Saudi Arabia - benefits the royal house of Saud on the home front and THAT amply merits the expense of a measly few billion. Within the arab region of the ME, a full 30% of twitter users are saudi or something like that. Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy. Kings historically take a dim view of anything resembling a free press. Because when the citizenry can communicate freely the throne usually starts to shake.
"Someone should really tell those deviants that if they’re that enamored with people in drag they could just ask one of them out on a date..." That's not how the bigoted deal with this. The proper way for a conservative to cater to their non-heterosexual impulses is to do it the Lindsey Graham way - with an epic feat of hypocrisy.
