  • DOJ Investigation: Mississippi PD Ran ‘Dickensian Debtors Prison,’ Violated Rights Regularly

Wheelchair accessible spaces aren't treated any different legally than regular handicapped spaces in the US, they're just more accessible for people that use wheelchairs and have a van. As long as you have a handicapped tag/placard, either permanent or temporary you can park in a wheelchair accessible handicapped space even if you don't use a wheelchair. I've done it many times myself, since often that's the only handicapped space left at a business. I do try to leave them open if I can, but I have a handicapped placard for good reason and need to park close. You need to have a doctor issue a letter saying you qualify for a handicapped tag/placard. They can issue permanent ones (blue placards here in my state of Tennessee or a special tag) or temporary if you're seriously injured (red placards) based on what the doctor says you qualify for. If you truly need one, it's not hard to get one. Both wheelchair using drivers and parents of autistic children that might run into traffic can get one. While I'll happily call the cops on someone parking in a handicapped space without a tag/placard (always some able-bodied asshole who thinks they're above the law) I don't think they should be arrested. Fined, yes, but not arrested. Save that for the assholes who think it's cool to park in the fire lane.

  • Brazil Bans ExTwitter In Battle With Musk, Takes VPNs & Users Down With It

    Manabi ( profile ), 31 Aug, 2024 @ 06:04pm

FWIW I've seen comments elsewhere saying the fines are only intended to apply to people posting similar content to what Moraes wants taken down. Said content is against Brazilian law, so the fines only applying to people using a VPN to violate Brazil's laws makes some sense.

I think it'd play differently with BlueSky. First off, they're not going to agree to cooperate then suddenly decide not to on a whim, which is what Musk did with Twitter. Secondly, no one at BlueSky's going to make posts taunting Moraes like Musk's been doing. Instead BlueSky will have their lawyers work with Brazilian lawyers and quietly find a solution that works, even if no one gets everything they want from it. Even if they ultimately refuse to take down the content, I'll bet they'd at least agree to block it in Brazil and that would probably keep Moraes happy when he's not being antagonized by the company. You know, basically BlueSky will be adults instead of adopting Musk's Twitter Toddler Mode of negotiation and won't piss the judge off.

This is Similar to Bad Cases Leading to Bad Case Law

Just like how a bad case can lead to courts creating bad case law to punish a bad actor, this is the same. Musk has been out-right antagonistic towards Moraes, so is it any surprise Moraes is pushing back hard the only way he can: By punishing Musk's companies. Hopefully he'll be made to see that banning VPNs is a step too far, but personally I see this whole mess as almost entirely Musk's fault. He's not only been a total jackass towards Moraes on Twitter, taunting him (that tweet with a photo of Moraes behind bars for example) but also the fact that Twitter quietly agreed to cooperate, then failed to do so, almost certainly due to Musk intervening, is what has Moraes so angry he's doing this. Musk's basically single-handedly damaging free speech in Brazil by being an asshole, further proving just how much he really cares about it.

  • Immunity Denied To Officer Who Claimed A Suicidal Man Pointed A Gun At Him Through His Own Head

    Manabi ( profile ), 15 Jul, 2024 @ 09:28pm

    He's a Fucking Murderer

In a sane world he'd be rotting in prison for life, because he quite clearly murdered that man in cold blood. He was given and had a non-lethal weapon, but chose to use a lethal one multiple times instead. He's a sociopath and a murderer, but because he's a cop he'll never go to jail or be punished for this beyond possibly financial penalties. Maybe they'll at least bankrupt his ass and ruin his life that way. And the police wonder why no one respects them. Defending people like Krook is why.

Meanwhile Twitter Issues False Account Limitations

And while Musk is focusing on that bullshit, I had an account get limited for twelve hours for "violence". Happened instantly after replying to an art tweet (It shows a girl undressing in public on her own initiate, no violence at all. Notably that tweet is still up.) commenting on the content of the image, how the artist had drawn parts of it. Posted reply and bam, account's limited. Limitation stayed after taking the stupid test and deleting that tweet that broke not a single rule on any social media service, not even Musk's Twitter, but Twitter claimed did. Apparently they've shadow-banned that account and are punishing people who interact with it. (Remember when Musk bitched about shadow-banning? Yeah, so do I. He sure does a lot of it.) Compare that to Musk's MAGA fanboys openly posting graphic photos of the dead shooter yesterday, celebrating him being killed yesterday (and probably today, I'm avoiding any tags that might bring up more of them and blocked the whole trending block with uBlock filters yesterday), without flagging them as sensitive without anything happening to them. There's tweets glorifying violence against even Musk Twitter's ToS without a thing being done about them. This is just going to run more advertisers off. Twitter can't die fast enough, I really wish more artists I follow would leave it, but looks like they won't until it's dead.

  • Elon, After Personally Driving Away Advertisers, Tells Them To Go Fuck Themselves (Repeatedly), And Says ‘Earth’ Will ‘Judge’ Them For Killing ExTwitter

    Manabi ( profile ), 30 Nov, 2023 @ 12:33pm

Yeah, he's almost certainly is seriously unwell due to undergoing and that can lead to suicide, so I don't want to joke about it. But at the same time I have no sympathy for him whatsoever. He's a truly awful person who karma has finally decided to kick in on. He's quite literally the sole person responsible for everything bad that's happened to Twitter and himself since he bought it.

No, it's most likely narcissistic collapse with part of it happening live on TV:

Narcissistic collapse happens when a person with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) becomes unable to uphold their grandiose, confident image due to a perceived fatal blow to their reputation. This leads to a breakdown which manifests as angry outbursts, irritable or defensive behavior, and verbal or physical aggression. Internally the person with NPD feels a loss of sense of self along with perceived rejection and abandonment. It can result in harm to the person with NPD and those around them.
That explains everything about the video. This suggests things at Twitter are far worse than we think they are and that the end is nigh. Things had to have gotten so bad that they've forced Musk to admit to himself that he has failed, although he'll never admit it to others. He's only going to get worse from here and suicide is a real possibility.

  • ‘AI’ Is Supercharging Our Broken Healthcare System’s Worst Tendencies

    Manabi ( profile ), 24 Nov, 2023 @ 01:01pm

I had to wait six months to see a cardiologist this year, even though I was having symptoms that could have possibly been a clogged artery. (Turned out to be my blood pressure meds causing side effects, despite my taking them for many years.) The cardiologist simply had no earlier slots available for a new patient. People dragging up the waits bullshit clearly don't use medical care much. Or they're lying. Can't rule that one out.

My guess is she negotiated a hefty golden parachute and is going to stay around until Twitter's burnt to the ground to get it. Jokes on her, though. By that point Twitter won't have any money to pay it out.

I think that's unlikely because of the rebranding. People who haven't been following the Musk follies won't know that X is Twitter and will think it's a porn site instead. Who the hell wants to bank with a porn site?

Ignores Hacked Accounts & Stolen Credit Cards

This totally ignores that a lot of spam comes from hacked accounts. Usually ones that have been dormant for a long time, but the user had reused a password from some site that got hacked. Those accounts will still be able to spam away without a fee. In fact this would make them more valuable to spammers and would likely increase hacked accounts being used for spam. This will also do nothing to prevent spammers from using stolen credit cards to pay the fee. They don't care, it's not their money. And when the real owner of the card notices the fraud Twitter will get hit with a chargeback. That'll cause them to lose money. Not to mention if there's a ton of chargebacks their payment provider may drop them. Then they wouldn't be able to accept any payments from users until they find a new one. But of course Musk doesn't realize any of that happens, so he didn't consider it. The only thing he's "genius" at is being stupid.

  • Math Problem For Linda Yaccarino: If 90% Of The Top Advertisers Have Come Back, But Are Only Spending 10% Of What They Used To, How Screwed Are You?

    Manabi ( profile ), 12 Oct, 2023 @ 10:23am

My bet is Twitter offered them a ton of free impressions with any ad buy, so Visa said "Okay, here's $10 for a few impressions." and got a bunch of free ad impressions for basically nothing.

  • Elon Musk Decides ‘Who Needs Headlines, When We Can Just Have Pretty Pictures?’; Suspends Account That Made Fun Of Him

    Manabi ( profile ), 08 Oct, 2023 @ 12:32pm

It's not a problem from a technical standpoint. Just a bit of server-side code to check the request for the image is from a Twitter/X server, then use ImageMagick to embed the article headline in the image. Then no matter who links to it the image will contain the headline. But that doesn't solve the issue with vision-impaired people using screen readers. And it's also dancing to Musk's tune, so why bother? There's a good chance he'll quietly change this back before long anyway. He's as mercurial as a toddler hopped up on sugar and meth.

Also, even if all four wheels are touching, if they're on a single tile that tile is experiencing the full 2000lbs of weight. So wheels or not, it can still damage the floor. Musk, of course, was too stupid to understand this and demonstrated his stupidity openly. I'll bet he did damage tiles and NTT's still trying to get him to pay for the damage.

If you use a lot of regulation to stop capitalist abuses and provide a strong welfare state you can get benefits for everyone in society. You also need to tax the top earners at a very high tax rate, to prevent things like billionaires sucking up all the money and hoarding it. What we have now is not that. Republicans have spent decades dismantling regulations, allowing companies and people to abuse the system, often with impunity. (cough Elon Musk cough) (See also: Polluting the environment and ignoring climate change.) They also kept cutting taxes on the top tax bracket. During the entire post-WWII boom period (1950 - 1973), the top rate was 70% - 91%. Then Reagan came along and cut the rate first to 50%, then later even lower in the upper 30s. Loopholes inserted into the tax laws by lobbyists for the rich insure they don't pay anywhere near that either. At the same time they were also cutting welfare programs. All this combined stagnated incomes for almost everyone but the top earners, made it damn near impossible to get out of poverty and become a productive financial contributor to society and wiped out a large portion of the middle class. And I didn't even mention our fucked-up medical system that puts most Americans one medical crisis away from bankruptcy. What you're defending isn't the system we have now, while the people responding to you are criticizing the current system. This makes you look out of touch at best, carrying water for billionaires at worst.
