California Politicians Decide Not To SMSpam People

from the how-nice dept

One thing that’s amusing about watching the law-making process is how often the law makers happen to exempt themselves. For example, political messages are excluded from both the Do Not Call list and the CAN SPAM law. However, it appears that politicians in California are a bit more sensitive to the trouble caused by annoying intrusive electronic campaigning (despite quite a history of political spamming in various campaigns) and have approved legislation that would, at the least, ban text messaging spam to mobile phones from politicians. Of course, they can still email and call without too much trouble. Of course, it can be a bit amusing to see politicians pass laws directed entirely at themselves — as it often feels like they’re banning things they’re afraid their opponents would use to beat them in a campaign.
