Skype Goes Wireless

from the more-convergence... dept

Not a surprise at all, but VoIP software provider Skype has now announced their mobile version that will let people with WiFi-enabled PDAs turn those PDAs into Skype-enabled phones. While for many this may seem more like a party trick, it’s taking people one step closer to convergence between a variety of different VoIP solutions and the regular phone system. Who knows how many people actually want to use Skype from a gadget at a hotspot, but it does open up some new possibilities, and will help people realize that VoIP is more than just replacing the traditional phone system with voice traveling over the internet. I’m still a bit skeptical that the Skype-branded solution is really that revolutionary, but it’s good to see them experiment with pushing the boundaries of how to offer VoIP solutions.
