Cingular Now 50 Percent GPRS

Of the big 6 wireless carriers, Cingular is the least vocal about its wireless data strategy. Most of their network is TDMA based and like AT&T they are overlaying it with GSM/GPRS. They now have 50% of their markets covered with GSM/GPRS and are on target to complete the overlay by 2004. At the same time they announced that they are testing EDGE and will have their major markets live by the end of 2003. They certainly aren’t leading the pack in terms of rolling out service or making them affordable, But then they aren’t marketing them much either. Maybe they are taking the slow road hoping for prices to stabalize to leap frog everyone else with EDGE’s faster speeds in 2004.
