The Red Herring wants to warn everyone not to get suckered into believing that artificial intelligence is the next big thing. It’s one of those areas that becomes the “next big thing” every few years, but nothing much ever comes of it. Now, though, there are a bunch of books coming out talking about AI, and how we really need to pay attention to it. The article warns people not to invest in it, because it’s basically going to be a complete money waster. While I’m not so negative on the concept of AI, I agree that investing money into startups doing AI seems silly – unless there is a clear, understandable (and potentially profitable) application for the technology. So many AI initiatives seem to simply be initiatives for the sake of AI – rather than to achieve something practical.
