The Uninvited Bassist

from the making-things-better dept

An interesting NY Times article (registration of some sort needed) talks about a bass player who decided to add the “missing” bass lines to songs from the band the White Stripes (made up of only a guitar and drum) and put them up on the web for free (though, it appears the files have now been taken down). What’s cool is (as the article points out), this is what the internet was supposed to be about. People building off of work from one another to make things even better. If you let people learn and build off of each others outputs you often get something even greater. This is, of course, exactly what the entertainment industry doesn’t understand. How long until the RIAA goes after Steven McDonald, even though he claims he received verbal permission from the White Stripes?
