The Fun Of Lapsed Domain Names

from the the-rentachicken.com-that-never-was dept

A very funny article over at Salon looking through lists of various domain names that have expired. It does make you wonder what some people planned to do with things like IAmCarbonatedMilk.com and RentAChicken.com, but never got around to. There are other sites of peoples names, or statements of feelings (ILoveClaireAlways.com) which make you wonder where those emotions went. Apparently “always” means until Network Solutions sent the renewal bill. What’s scary, actually, is as I read through many of these expired domain names, is on just how many of them I thought “you know, that’s not a bad domain name…”. Obviously, I need help.

me too!

Man, I was reading through the lists… and then I started forming a list of domain names that were worth buying… and my list kept growing.

I spent at least an HOUR making that list!

And then I realized, unless pharmaceutical companies started naming their products after the domain names, they were worthless.

You just gotta keep repeating to yourself–> the original owner couldn’t do anything with it and the current odds were higher than a year ago.

Re: Agreed but...

the cost to register a domain are so much lower now–What was once $70 or even $35 to Network Solutions is now under $10 to somebody like RegisterFly or GoDaddy. Yes the environment is much much worse, but the cost is also much much lower, so some may be worth taking a flier on. But probably not.
