It's Good To Be Young And Unemployed

from the it-builds-character dept

Is there anything worse than having someone older than you say it’s good to face a tough situation because it “builds character”? Well, here’s the equivalent article from Business 2.0 where Penelope Trunk (pen name for a former dot com exec) tells young people that it’s good for them to graduate into a world where it’s not easy to find a job. It sounds like she’s telling everyone that it “builds character”. To some extent, I do agree that people over the past few years have thought that finding a (high paying, cushy) job was way to easy. However, I’m not sure it’s a great situation when a completely qualified person finds themselves serving french fries at McDonalds instead of working somewhere more brain-intensive. I guess it’s a good thing, then, that the NY Times has decided that the recession is over in Silicon Valley.

Yeah ...

Trunk is a professional troll, and this is one of her trollier moments. Emerging when the job market has collapsed can be a life altering experience, because employers discriminate against the long term unemployed. Guilty of nothing more than being in the wrong place at the wrong time, many find that their lives have been destroyed.

That’s reality, and it’s sickening. If the woman had a shred of decency, she’d shut up, but then we are talking about somebody who used her blog to hold her own husband up to public attack when he (probably wisely) started to talk about divorce. Not a nice person at all.
