  One major argument is that copyright protections last as long as they do because artists deserve some form of reassurance that their work will still continue to bring in money during their lifetime. Piracy could disappear literally tomorrow and it would not change how Hollywood approaches pitches.

  And if copyright disappeared tomorrow, artists wouldn't lose the ability to make a reasonable amount of income from their work.
