I'm so hoping John Oliver does one of his episodes about this. Dressed in a pirate costume. Looking sexy.
Wtf happened in this comment section? Satan released his favorite bigot or something?
Oh but the conversation is pretty much happening. The problem here is copyright.
You seem to be reading another site and confusing with TD.
People are being very vocal against this bullshit on various social media sites since talks about charging extra started circulating. They ignored it and went ahead and then made the "shocked pikachu" face when things went to hell. Well duh. The backlash is going to be even worse here in Brazil. Every single person from my social circles say they are considering cancelling Netflix because it's already too expansive if compared to the competition (if I sum the values of Disney/Star, HBO and Amazon it's still cheaper than Netflix and the only downside is I have just 3 screens on those). Adding another fee on top of an already expensive service with a culture of password sharing wide3spread is going to be a nuke in the feet, not a shot.

From organized crime*
If heads don't roll they'll keep doing it. It's terrifying how easily law enforcement go full criminal to fight crime. This is no different than organized crime.
Musk is there to prove that some of Wall Street CEOs reputation is just collective masturbation and overall sexual tension with anything that might boost short term gains, long term survival of the companies be damned. Also, logic be damned when you get to the higher echelon. If any peon fails that hard costing the companies a few billions he/she will be fired never to find a job in the industry ever again. And probably prosecuted. These "demigods" get millions in bonuses. There's no punishment for being awful if you are rich enough.
Note: I'm not saying the US participation on WWII wasn't important, I'm just saying that it was not the bulk of the victory. The Soviets were by far the largest contributors and plenty of American personalities (including high ranked military officers and politicians) recognized it at the time.
I'm inclined to think China is not dumb. As the article say they know any censorship will not be perfect and they are ok with it. Their intention with the great firewall and other censoring mechanisms isn't the censorship per se but to avoid weaponization of information flow like it is happening everywhere in the world and like it has happened in the past and used to implement and keep authoritarian regimes in place in the past despite what the population needs or wants. At this point I need to make one thing very clear for the ones already up in arms with my comment: I do not think the Chinese government is right in censoring and having a tight controlling grip over the citizens but I believe that it's more complex than "China evil, West good" simplification. And, considering how misinformation campaigns have caused catastrophes for ages now and the internet amplified the reach and the speed info spreads, I can understand why they'd choose that path. The last 4 years here in Brazil have been hell because of these information wars tactics. I could go on about how much disinformation is spread about other places like Cuba or even historical events (Americans really think the US won WWII and had a major role in it!) that are harmful in the long term. I'm not entirely sure what would be the solution and I believe it doesn't need to be via this censorship route but we do have a problem that China managed to avoid the blunt of it for now.
Copyright, as it works today, goes against how culture works starting with the terms (courtesy of Mickey Mouse). If you value the artists you abhor current copyright framework. They are mutually exclusive.
I'm very lazy to actually login to comment but this blew my mind. I wonder who gets to sue who in that video.. On a side note: TechDirt please let us comment logged out by adding the registered email and then claim the comments later when logged in... I dunno why this option was deprecated..
Preempting Tobi, Koby, Mathew or whatever is the flavor of the troll of the moment? They seem to avoid you when you post that question like vampires would avoid Jesus himself lol
I always get astonished by the sheer amount of spam big companies report. It's several hundred billions of messages if you consider email alone. This has a cost to send and filter both in terms of money and environmentally speaking as well. But crooks profit from it and these crooks are usually on countries that are not very interested in actually doing something to curb the problem. A coordinated international effort and some heavy prison time would help a lot, including putting pressure on those countries. Filtering is obvious and welcome but it's like drying ice, it doesn't go to the root of the problem.
That's a huge volume.. The current captcha seems quite harmless nowadays (I barely ever see any window asking for input). Wouldn't something like this ease the burden on TD servers? I wonder where they originate from as well. If I was in charge I'd probably blanket ban certain ip ranges from the worst offenders from commenting without an account. I mean, you can still not reveal any identity even if you sign up. I certainly would understand if you took such actions and my country was hit (I wouldn't be surprised if Brazil is one of the main sources of spam content).
Mass user evasion, severe revenue drops, massive debt, labor issues, consumer protection issues... And they say the guy is a genius. The privilege of being genius by inheriting money from papa.
Hell, it's now a common thing here to just let some minor crime go not to get involved with cops because it can screw you over more than whatever you lost to any criminal. Specially if you are not white or don't live in the right neighborhood. This is fcked up. Respect is not owed, it's earned. And most police forces do not deserve it.
These aren’t public servants. These are children playing dress upYes, they are public servants, yes they are cops. Bad ones but they are. And we have both bureaucratic obstacles and incompetent/corrupt people in charge in all power stances (executive, legislative and judiciary) that are not allowing these bad cops to be weeded out. Or make it hard enough that it doesn't happen. Stop treating this shit as if it's not common, as if it is an exception. It's not. This is valid for many countries including mine. You don't get a label like "pig" popular to refer to cops if there isn't widespread violations like this.
Precisely. They can simply move on and the service will die.
