If the answers to A and B are "yes," have you discussed this matter with any US lawyer who actually knows the law?   Across the nation, child protective services agencies investigate the home lives of roughly 3.5 million children every year, according to statistics from the federal Department of Health and Human Services. Only about 5% of them are ultimately found to have been physically or sexually abused.

  The system needs to be overhauled but "tying them up with administrivia" isn't going to get more children hurt or killed. The odds are that obtaining a court order or warrant isn't going to delay getting a harmed child out of a harmful situation. Mandate the acquisition of warrants/orders and I guarantee CPS will spend more time deterring and responding to actual harm than blundering around people's homes just because it can.

  Nations with total bans on civilian guns still have booming black markets for guns.

  How many of those nations have an omnipresent school shooting problem? The people shooting up schools aren't your normal scofflaws running around with unregistered guns. Most school shooters use legally obtained weapons.

  This is more supremely dumb bullshit. I'm not calling for the end of private gun ownership. And what does the last part of that even mean? We arm schoolkids because cops can't do the job? Or if you just mean "responsible adults," we arm teachers because cops can't do the job? We had armed good guys on the premises and the first arrivals did nothing. How the fuck did easy access to guns protect anybody at the Uvalde school? All it did was enable the killer to kill. And the cops that refused to do anything but act in their own self-interest allowed the killer to perform even more killing. Your comment isn't internally-coherent enough to be given the respect of being called an "argument."

  I realize I'm late to the celebration of my own alleged hypocrisy but let me just address your comment. I'm not suggesting a War on Guns. I suggested (and did not specify) gun control. We're the only nation where schools get shot up on a regular basis. Either we control guns or we control citizens -- maybe go back to the day where everyone who, say, masturbates and gets caught doing it, ends up in a sanitarium where they can be abused until they eventually die of neglect. Which do you prefer? There's a combination of factors that need to be considered but you want to believe calling for any form of gun control is a War on Guns. I'm not advocating for cops pulling over people or raiding their houses to strip them of guns. I don't desire a police state where only cops have guns. But there's a crisis here and unfortunately most of the people with power use conflations as shitty as yours to present the issue as binary.

  This sounds like you don't like cops being criticized and the only thing you have to work with are specious arguments about your extremely limited definition of "tech." Techdirt hasn't hidden its willingness to explore areas that affect our collective rights but are not necessarily considered "tech." There are plenty of other sites that cover tech and will never bother you with posts detailing troubling rights abuses by government employees.

  Having referenced your prior comment, you seem to have a problem with me using "witching" and "dowsing" interchangeably. I suggest you take up this argument with the internet. Dowsing/witching/bullshit/etc. I admit I was wrong to call it "witchcraft" in the last article's headline, but what Arpad Vass is teaching has been historically understood as "witching," even if he won't admit it. As for the "year of our lord" sentence, I won't change or apologize for it. It's a deliberate addition that's meant to highlight the ridiculousness of Vass's nonexistent contribution to the forensic community. We should definitely not have people who instruct law enforcement investigators passing on the secrets of long-debunked twig twitching. I'm sorry this is the aspect of this post that most offended your sensibilities.
