I first saw this yesterday, but here’s another story about the missing Mozilla code. It seems that some of the Mozilla code that can be used to block advertisements in the browser is now missing, and folks are quick to blame AOL for forcing the cut (since AOL loves their advertising). As this article points out, there are a number of other potential reasons for the change, and considering that Mozilla is an ongoing thing, it’s not like this decision is final.

Time Warner – Disney Dispute Might Cause Merger Problems

Now that the Time Warner/Disney dispute is temporarily solved (and those of you in the 11 effected cities can go back to watching “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”) people are suggesting that this display of power might threaten the Time Warner/AOL merger. While it doesn’t necessarily have anything directly to do with the merger, it may upset some people who feel that Time Warner is flexing its monopoly powered muscles, even before the merger is complete.

CMGI and AdAuction

News.com is reporting that CMGI is taking a stake in AdAuction, which will be changing its name. I think this makes a lot of sense for CMGI which owns a zillion different companies related to internet advertising, and can use AdAuction’s services to enhance their own.

Peapod: Not Dead Yet

So, it sounds as if someone has agreed to pony up a bridge loan for struggling Peapod. Whoever it was is not identified. Also, it’s not clear just how much they want in return for the money. Somehow I don’t think that money came cheaply.

Wall St Hype

There have been several articles lately about the Wall St. PR machine (Business Week). I find it very interesting how several articles (Merrill,Picture of Clinton and Abby Cohen) appear today that seem to suggest stability and the “correction” has happened.

Apparently BellSouth and SBC are negotiating to merge their wireless operations creating the second largest US wireless company. I guess big wireless plays are all the rage these days.

White House claims innocence

The White House is claiming it was simply an accident that it lost a good chunk of email sent from outside parties. I tend to think that they wouldn’t be lying about something like this. First and foremost nothing all that earth-shattering would be sent through standard email, with no encryption or security to begin with. Let’s face it, it’s not rocket science to monitor an unsecured stream of data, regardless of where it’s going. Second, shit happens. I lost an entire volume of data yesterday. Does that mean I was trying to hide something from the CNET executives? Doubtful…

Yahoo-eBay Rumors Back on Again

Bank One to Sell Wingspan?

Apparently, Bank One is shopping around the idea of selling off Wingspan, its online bank. Wingspan was launched a year or so ago to much fanfare (and tons of advertising) but never seemed to go anywhere.

Tax credit for rural areas

A pair of U.S. Senators is expected <a href=http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1004-200-1580424.html”>to introduce legislation that will give tax credits to companies that provide high-speed Net access to rural areas. A part of me thinks this is a great idea, as it will bring the Internet to more people. Another part of me thinks this isn’t so good, as the companies that would most likely be doing this can barely set up high-speed access to the urban areas.
