David Ellison Pinky Swears CNN Will Retain Editorial Independence, Points To CBS

from the the-truth-business dept

We’ve already all seen what the Ellison family’s version of “editorial independence” looks like over at CBS, where contrarian troll Bari Weiss has turned the already very Republican friendly news giant into a safe space for right wing zealots and autocrats. All overseen by a Brendan Carr chosen censor tasked with ensuring the channel always makes Donald Trump happy.

As always with authoritarian regimes (and corporate ownership), this is all presented to the public as an effort to restore balance, eliminate (nonexistent) “liberal bias,” and reach out to real Americans. As if billionaires and their useful idiots could care less about everyday Americana.

After being gifted two Hollywood studios and two major news empires by daddy and Donald Trump, fail-upward nepobaby David Ellison made the rounds last week to insist that CNN’s “editorial independence” would be retained under Paramount/CBS ownership. His evidence? CBS:

“So, look, I’ve said this since the beginning, which is, you know, for — when it really comes to — editorial independence will absolutely be maintained. It’s maintained at CBS. It’ll be maintained at CNN. And, really, who we want to talk to is the 70% of Americans and really around the world that identify as center-left, as center-right. And we want to be in the truth business. We want to be in the trust business. And that’s not going to change.”

Of course, if anybody had actually been paying attention to CBS, they’d see how the network under Weiss has already tried to repeatedly kill stories that aren’t favorable to Donald Trump, gone out of its way to normalize right wing opportunists like Erika Kirk, and has driven away a lot of remaining CBS journalists with Weiss’ obvious efforts to pander to Trump and Netanyahu.

Like CBS, CNN already goes well out of its way to be extra friendly to authoritarians. The network has routinely faced criticism for consistently airing sneering MAGA devotee Scott Jennings. Under Ellison ownership there’s zero serious doubt, by anyone, that CNN will become even more friendly to autocrats. After they get done firing untold thousands of people to try and pay down the deal’s immense debt.

Traditionally there’s only one editorial direction U.S. journalism usually goes under consolidated corporate ownership. U.S. media owners like tax cuts, deregulation, subsidies, access, and merger approvals, so corporate media’s editorial slant generally follows the financial interests of ownership. The pretense that U.S. media suffers from widespread “liberal bias,” or the belief that there are still functional firewalls between ownership and editorial, are long-deceased relics.

Larry Ellison clearly wants to hoover up what’s left of corporate media (including CBS, CNN, HBO) — and fuse it with his co-ownership of TikTok to create a sort of Hungary-esque autocratic state media, where administration allies praise dear leader while the government strangles independent and public media just out of frame.

The only thing saving us from the full and terrible vision of this outcome to date is the fact that very few of the weird nepobabies and brunchlords being tasked with its creation have anything you’d mistake for competence.

It should be noted that nobody wants to watch Fox News Lite when the real thing is right there. It’s partly why CBS and CNN’s viewership is already in the toilet.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the big cable news players eventually just end up being Fox News and MS NOW. Nowadays only Fox News, CNN and MS NOW are actually treated as notable players when it comes to reporting on ratings from my cursory check, CBS isn’t even on the radar anymore.

Corporate ownership

I agree that corporate media ownership is always aligned with Republican economic royalism. (If you want dissent from economic royalism, you might want to read the Wall Street Journal’s excellent news section, which is happy to dig up capitalist dirt.)

But corporate media are not always full MAGA. On “social” issues, many corporate-owned media outlets are milk-and-water pwogs. (Nothing too scary, of course.) And that’s where, I think, the Ellison-owned media are going to move to the right.

For the 20th time, CBS has been a DNC propaganda organ for decades (60 minutes in particular) and Bari Weiss, while moderate, is a left of center Democrat. She DOES want to push it rightward, but only cuz it has gone so far Left its bias has become unprofitable (much like CNN and MSNBC).

Except for FOX, every MSM org is at least center left. This is a measurable fact.

That you claim any of these things look even vaguely “republican friendly” just tells on yourself, and outs you as an insane commie leftist who shouldn’t be writing on this issue at all. (but then so is most readers of TD)

Re:

Bari ‘got her start organising a smear campaign ntontry and get professors fired for their race and for having left wing political beliefs’ Weiss? She’s so left wing she built an entire career attacking brown people, the left and centrist journalist outlets from the right, and whining about how the left is mean about her. Practically Karl Marx, she is.

Re: Re: Re:

So you never read any of her NYT output then? The pissing and moaning on social media aimed at her then colleagues and the whiny press release she wrote when she quit to go be a paid mouthpiece for the right directly? Or are unaware of Columbia Unbecoming, the hitpiece ‘documentary’ she put out attacking professors who just so happened to be middle eastern, who were all eventually cleared?

Amazing how such a long, leftist career involves her always coming down on the side of racism and the right.

Re:

Two things.

  1. Given how we don’t know the actual political beliefs of the shooter or their actual motive for the shooting, calling Kirk’s killer “an insane leftist” feels like you’re assuming what you want to be true so the truth won’t matter if the shooter turns out to be a right-winger.
  2. Her opportunity was everything after her husband was killed. She could have mourned him privately and with some sense of dignity and grace. She did not. What she has been doing is milking her “grieving widow to some guy, I’unno his name, was it Chuck?” act for as much personal gain as she can muster before her fifteen minutes of fame run out.

Re:

A ‘deranged leftist’ who was known for being a good republican boy, someone you would be putting on placards were he the one shot. It is telling how quick the right wing media dropped the ‘killed by a leftist’ bit the second that people looked into his background beyond his ‘having a non cisgender friend’, it’s almost as if the fact people on the right keep trying to kill people on the right is inconvenient for narrative building and the story of St. Charlie you are all trying to build is harmed by it almost as much as it is by the man’s words and deeds when given their full context.

Can't we just give journalistic balance a chance for once in the US?

People are being real mean to poor David Ellison here, he just wants to ensure that the news fairly covers both sides of the political spectrum equally, from the die-hard pro-MAGAt point of view on one side and the literally-frothing-at-the-mouth rabidly pro-MAGAt point of view on the other.
