Hey Brendan Carr, Try Censoring This
from the look-at-those-ratings dept
Since we know that FCC Chair Brendan Carr sometimes reads what we write here at Techdirt, I figured I’d post this one just for him and hopes that he watches it, seeing as we know that, thanks to his own mafioso-like tactics, his good friends at Sinclair Broadcasting (along with Nexstar) refused to show Jimmy Kimmel’s show last night in Washington DC where Carr lives and works. You sure missed a good opening monologue. So I figured I’d help him out by making sure it got as widely seen as possible.

And that, folks, is exactly how you should react to bullies and fascists (i.e., bullies with more power) who demand you do something for them and threaten you with dire consequences for refusing: “Fuck you, make me.”

Buddy, none of this had anything to do with Carr even tho you really want it to.
Kimmel is losing money, a liar, and now will not be carried by 1/4 of the affiliates. His contract is up in December, it will not be renewed.
Re:
…except for the fact that Carr and his boss both threatened to revoke broadcast licenses based on the content of Kimmel’s speech, which spooked Nexstar and Sinclair into pulling broadcasts of Kimmel’s show so they wouldn’t piss off Trump any further, which in turn spooked Disney/ABC into suspending Kimmel. The timing has been laid out on this by multiple sources, so don’t go saying it hasn’t.
And yet, the decision to suspend him was a political decision instead of a financial one. The decision to bring him back, on the other hand…
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” Jimmy Kimmel was suspended for saying that. Show me where the lie is, because from what I’ve seen and heard, “the MAGA gang” was absolutely trying to paint Kirk’s killer as a radical leftist, a trans person, and anything else other than a right-wing extremist.
For now, anyway. Neither Nexstar nor Sinclair said they were pulling his show permanently.
You really should double-check your claims to know if they’re true. Multiple credible sites for entertainment news have reported that Kimmel’s contract is up in May of next year. As to whether it will be renewed? It’s possible, and maybe even likely, given the state of late night television ratings and the similarly impending end of Stephen Colbert’s show on CBS.
And this is why the upcoming elections are the most important in US history. With every branch of government controlled by Donald “Colonel Klink” Trump, we (democrats, independents and even republicans) need some real push-back.
Re:
I mean, on balance I think they’re less important than the last one was, but yes, they’re extremely important.
Just on the off chance that pathetic fuckhat comes all the way down here:
Fuck you, Carr. You are a complete and utter waste of energy. Your name shall live in infamy, you vile cretin.
Brendan Carr is a bitch-made liar.
The opening line killed me I had to watch the video a few times because I missed it laughing too hard. “As I was saying…” lol
Re:
Ha. I called it.
(For those who don’t know: it’s a reference to former Tonight Show host Jack Paar.)
lol.
Carr really needs to step up his game, he’s less scary than a mean oped from Amy Klobuchar.
Mission accomplished
That this fuckery would not stand up in court was clear anyway, though Trump put out a few more threats after ABC put Kimmel back.
Like with a lot of Trump administration overreach extending to downright blackmail (cf the Harvard attacks which are a roaring success because of all the smaller actors that were coerced into toeing the line), the main objective was not the actual act but rather its chilling effect on parties not directly in the spotlight.
Disney will likely pay dearly behind the scenes for its calculated show of standing up for the First Amendment. And in the end, Kimmel is likely to get sacked anyway, just not in as openly an unconstitutional manner as the current showpiece put in scene.
American voters have to put an end to that fuckery, and I am less than convinced that they will do so.
For those without the patience to watch for a half hour

Too much time around Donald Trump has a way of turning people into punchlines. Maybe it’s because they were a joke to begin with.
