This week, our first place winner on the insightful side is Stephen T. Stone with a comment about the assault on the idea that laws have any meaning at all:
A lot of people—especially in right-wing circles—tend to forget that the process of civilization is the process of everyone forgetting that they can grab a rock and bash someone’s skull in for little to no reason at all. Modern society as a whole rests on that careful, delicate process. Those who want to break society will not enjoy what happens if people begin to remember.
In second place, it’s Thad with a comment about Trump’s hypocrisy about protecting kids while going after NCMEC:
As far as Republicans are concerned, it’s not supposed to be protecting those kids.
For editor’s choice on the insightful side, we’ve got a couple comments about the Trump team making the CIA send a list of employees over unclassified email. First, it’s Strawb with a thought on what’s most surprising about the debacle:
I’m not surprised the Trump admin demanded intelligence over unsecured email, but I’m honestly surprised the CIA obliged. Could there really have been any serious ramifications if they had used a more secure method?
Next, it’s a quip from Pixelation that really could go on the funny side as well:
This is Trump administration counterintelligence. It is counter to intelligence.
Over on the funny side, our first place winner is an anonymous joke about a bill we described as “saddling” drag performers with restrictions:
Funny, I thought they were trying to make the acts less explicit. Adding a saddle seems rather counterproductive to that aim…
In second place, it’s another comment from Strawb, this time about something we said referencing people who squawk “elections have consequences” as a celebration of retribution:

For editor’s choice on the funny side, we’ve got a pair of anonymous comments. First, it’s a response to our post about understanding Musk’s takeover of federal systems as a cyberattack:
Russian and Chinese hackers were dreaming about accessing US Treasure computers for decades, Elon has done it in just two weeks. That’s efficiency!
Finally, it’s a general comment about everything going off the rails:
I hear the Overton window at Mar-a-Lago has a fantastic view of Hell this season.

But I’m pretty sure ‘slowing down’ is less likely in the next year to happen than me getting into a shootout with some fascists (police or otherwise) in my front yard. And that’s not fucking hyperbole.
I was, legitimately, going to fight one on my vacation because I wasn’t going to stand around and watch them assault a 50 year old.
This is where we are.
And I’m living in a area where I’m waaaay more likely to interact with skinheads, Nazis, fascists, white hoods, etc.

If sanity wins the year, from what I have heard, Techdirt will have played a non-trivial role in that.
So while the ride may not be fun, I’m sure there are already a large number of people that appreciate Techdirt.

Ironically, that’s a good thing, as much as I’d like to see less of it. It’s a sign that they don’t like a narrative counter to their echo chamber propaganda. They don’t like people pointing out that the soylent is made of people and the sunny horizon is a backdrop covering a smog-filled dystopia. If they were actually “winning” as they are prone to brag, they wouldn’t feel the need to show up and continue to try to make their reality seem dominant through so many repetitive posts. They’re afraid of a mid-term reversal that will stall anything Trump wants to get done that requires Congressional complicity. They’re afraid of Democrats running panels that investigate everything they’re currently doing. So we’ll continue to talk about how the emperor is naked and they’ll keep screaming that he wears the best clothes, everybody can see it, better than any president in history!

One reason traffic might be high is because so few of the mainstream channels, especially outside the US, are covering the details of what’s happening.
Or if they are they’re both-sidesing it to the point of nonsense.
I get news here that is really hard to find elsewhere.
