Funniest/Most Insightful Comments Of The Week At Techdirt

from the so-you-say dept

This week, our first place winner on the insightful side is an anonymous piece-by-piece reply to another comment about the reporter who was suspended from ExTwitter hours after publishing an article about it:

“In other words, he either bot boosted an article about botting, or else the botting services are giving him a freebie.”

You need to up your reading comprehension, dude.

See: Séamas O’Reilly: I criticised ‘free speech absolutist’ Elon Musk’s X. My account was suspended where your 75% figure comes from.

“Five minutes since I’d posted that article on Twitter, 75% of the replies I’d received had themselves been spam bots trying to sell fake shite to my followers.”

Not something beneficial for O’Reilly, no matter how you spin it. And describing self-interest on the part of the bot runners as “a freebie” is like calling #GamerGate “constructive criticism”.

In second place, it’s Amazing Rando with a comment about ExTwitter and regulatory compliance:

That’s why it’s so important to have a team, maybe call them Trust & Safety or Compliance to keep you out of this sort of trouble!

For editor’s choice on the insightful side, we’ve got a pair of comments about Wired’s recent fact-deficient attack on Section 230, and attacks on Section 230 in general. First, it’s an anonymous one:

Has anybody else noted that the hinted at subtext of all these anti 230 rants is: ‘The internet should be full of opinions that I like, and those that I dislike should be removed’. or ‘How dare you stop me from harassing people by telling them how wrong they are’.

Next, it’s That One Guy with a similar point:

A most telling absence

And the ‘There are no honest and/or reality-based arguments against 230’ streak remains unbroken since it made it into law.

It’s so strange, if the law really was as terrible as it’s critics want people to believe it is you’d think by now they’d have come up with at least one good argument against it that isn’t based upon misconceptions or flat out lies…

Over on the funny side, our first place winner is MrWilson with a response to our post about the cop who got in a fight with an acorn:

Just more anti-police hate speech from Tim. That acorn was dangerous and after it saw what happened to the back window of the vehicle, it’ll think twice about scarin’ the bajeezus out of that there brave deputy. Bet you wouldn’t be so brave as to unload a clip when a violent acorn comes for you!

Acorns Can Assault Badges!

In second place, it’s smb with a reply to a comment praising Musk and denying reality:

You forgot: “XTwitter is better and more popular than ever!”

For editor’s choice on the funny side, we start out with a response from Stephen T. Stone to a comment speculating about the reasons for ExTwitter’s deletion of a reporter’s account:

If Elon wants to ban Twitter accounts that make him (and his run as owner of Twitter) look bad, he should start with his own.

Finally, it’s That One Guy again, replying to a comment that did say “ExTwitter is better than ever”:

Not the brag you think it is

‘Since the local chapter of the KKK started hanging out at the bar I go to it’s been better than ever!’

That’s all for this week, folks!

Dammit, I missed the original post on XTwitter suspension. I’ve noticed lately that they’ve been suspending accounts of real people, but those belonging to folks selling something (usually x-rated) or bots are being allowed to run wild. When they appeal and ask why everyone has been getting canned responses with no details as to why their account was suspended. At this pace XTwitter will soon have no real people!

It’s strange how this site and most of the people who comment on it love–and I mean LOVE–to abuse and malign law enforcement, but they never have a bad word to say about disgusting groomer teachers or the politicians who support them in the stuffing of gay/tranny propaganda down the throats of vulnerable schoolchildren.

Hmmm.

Anonymous Coward says:

Re:

Firstly…

Reporting on the abuses of law enforcement isn’t heaping abuse on them, even if we have no love for them.

Secondly…

Most teachers who abuse their students tend to either get run out of the profession or, in some very select cases, become politicians.

And I don’t think most politicians want to treat LGBTQ+ folk as people and thus deserving the rights listed in the UNHRC.

And teachers usually are forced to do the will of politicians.

Meanwhile, the rest of us have to fight tooth and nail to ensure EVERYONE gets the respect they deserve. Especially against the corrupt powers that be.

Re: Re:

Understatement of the year.

A negro thug murdered two brave police officers and one firefighter yesterday in Minnesota, and yet you and your fellow travelers don’t spare a word for the victims and their families. Yet here you are this morning trumpeting the (detestable) work of an anti-American organization like the U.N.

  1. Your racism is showing.
  2. We don’t magically automatically have that information. If you wanna spread it, link an article. In fact, I went looking for an article myself. None of the articles I found listed the suspect’s name much less race.
  3. You need a dictionary and a history textbook (the US is literally a permanent member of the UN Security Council).

Your incompetence is no excuse, cop-hater.

Yes, yes, you want to condemn all Black people based on the actions of a single Black person, and you want the rest of us to ignore systemic fuck-ups by police and buy into your racist bullshit (which you will deny is racist because “I didn’t say the N-word”). We get it, we’re not buying it, go fuck yourself all the way back to /pol/.

Re: Re: Re:4

It is a cardinal sin of the left to report that a criminal is a member of one of their favored victim groups. When someone from one of those favored victim groups commits a crime, that must always be considered a unique occurrence that has nothing to do with the social dysfunctions present in that group. For example, when Missouri’s governor called the Black Kansas City murderers “thugs”, Kansas City’s mayor accused the governor of using a “racial dog whistle”.

On the other hand, when a criminal from those favored victim groups is killed resisting arrest, or is beaten by bullies and later dies, that must always be considered symptomatic of systemic x-ist and x-phobic beliefs of white heteronormative people, never of just individual circumstances.

Okay, now I know you’re ableist (to wit, anti-Autistic) and spouting debunked misconceptions about us people on the autistic spectrum. Do you know me? I cry. I get angry. And not just about myself, but about other people. I’ve donated so much in mutual aid this month because I DON’T FUCKING THINK ONLY OF MYSELF!!!

I’m sorry, but neurotypical bigots like yourself piss me off.

I don’t really care what you say/think.

And yet, here you are, trying (in vain) to hurt my feelings and get a reply that isn’t snarky as fuck. You’ll keep trying, and you’ll keep failing, and I’ll keep flagging you, and you’ll be ignored from here on out because I have better things to do than waste my time on someone that even 4chan would ignore.

Re:

I don’t imagine you will find much support for Mary Kay Letourneau here. Nor would you find great support for the catholic church. I imagine you would find significant words of condemnation for their actions. But somehow, I don’t think you are referring to the actual sexual abuse of children. Something about your words suggests you are more concerned about ensuring you can determine the gentials of children by their clothing than whether or not the children were ever diddled.

Of course not, because you and your fellow travelers are depraved neo-Marxists.

Re: Re: Re:2

And more to the point: Teachers sexually abusing children should be (and already is) wholly and forcefully condemned by pretty much anyone with any sense of humanity. Telling a child about the existence of queer people in an age-appropriate manner, however, is not sexual abuse—but the poster above you clearly wants us to believe it is so we’ll join his anti-queer crusade and demand the immediate execution of all queer people (and their allies) by the federal government. Or, y’know, whatever other right-wing shock-jock bullshit they come up with for their trolling campaign.

Heads up, sunshine—I’m giving you an on-the-record statement on the matter.

I have maligned and will continue to malign law enforcement when the people within that sector prove through either gross negligence, utter incompetence, or willful abuse of power that they don’t deserve to be in that sector in any capacity.

I will malign any teacher who abuses their power and authority over children to sexually abuse one or more of those children. The same goes for cops, priests, politicians, doctors, lawyers, or anyone whose career grants them assumed power and authority over children that they can use to sexually abuse children with near-impunity.

I will not malign any person, regardless of profession, who dares to tell a child “queer people exist” in a way that a child can understand. Having that discussion won’t make that child queer; being unable to talk to a child about queer people without making that discussion all about sex is a skill issue.

I appreciate your taking the time to respond, Sir, and to confirm exactly what I’m saying.

You are a willing (eager?) foot soldier in the battle to push gender ideology into all schools, happily supporting the indoctrination of vulnerable children and young people into a depraved and deluded fantasy that inevitably results in their physical mutilation and chemical sterilization (for profit, at the hands of truly evil & ghoulish doctors).

Again, thank you kindly.

Re: Re: Re:

Except I’m not doing that.

A young child can have the existence of trans people explained to them in a way that doesn’t involve telling the child about sex, genitals, or anything that would be considered “too mature” for a child of a young age to understand/learn about. One doesn’t have to launch into an entire spiel about hormones and genital surgeries to do that; anyone who thinks otherwise has issues.

An adult can have that conversation without pushing any child into “transgenderism” or “a gender ideology” or whatever the hell you want to call it. The conversation itself won’t “turn a child trans” any more than having a conversation about gay people will “turn a child gay”.

A transgender child can have a conversation about their life/living situation with a teacher and not have it turn into your nightmarish fantasy of teachers “transing” children against their will or whatever it is you think happens in that situation but really doesn’t. Any teacher who actually tries doing that should be fired.

A transgender child can have a conversation about their gender with their parents without it turning into a rush to get that child into hormone treatments. If anything, such a rush is rare—I mean, a teenaged cisgender female can typically get breast implants easier/faster than a teenaged transgender child can get hormone therapy.

Acknowledging the existence of queer people is not “indoctrination” into a “lifestyle”. It is acknowledging that people who aren’t cishet exist—and that their lives matter as much as everyone else’s, regardless of your beliefs to the contrary. If you can’t make that acknowledgement without making it all about dicks or anal sex, that’s your skill issue, pal.

Re: Re: Re:2

Those children need to be told, in an age-appropriate way, that it’s their bodies that make them either a boy or a girl and that can’t ever change, but that there are some people who really wish they were the opposite of what they are, and some of them wish so hard that they pretend to be that opposite by dressing as if they were.

Re: Re: Re:4

Indeed, wasn’t making that point. Yet the counter response dose potentially bring a nuance that wasn’t present before in the form of the abortion-ban laws around the US. Intersex people wouldn’t fall into the narrow exemptions.

With those laws in play, those ideas clash. And the resulting logic is even more hypocritical.

Re: Re: Re:6

I take it you don’t keep up with current events on that front…

From a legal perspective (in states with abortion-ban laws) that’s extremely in doubt right now, even without the intersex angle.

The laws don’t even account much for the babies not being viable. Much less being born Intersex.

Re: Re:

And many teachers have that skill, by both training and experience. Contrast that to every politician who is not required to have any experience or training of any kind, in order to be a legislator or in some other form of power.

I see a problem there, don’t you?

You’ll note that 100% of that “abuse and malign[ing]” of law enforcement is in response to abuse and maligning by law enforcement. There are no stories simply shitting on cops for the hell of it. Their misdeeds are reported and commented on. You taking offense at that says a lot about you…

…but they never have a bad word to say about disgusting groomer teachers or the politicians who support them in the stuffing of gay/tranny propaganda down the throats of vulnerable schoolchildren.

Why would we comment on something that is simply not happening?

Re: Re: Re:

Right. It is a spectrum. We have no idea as to how many there are yet. Same for legs and arms. They are on a spectrum. And don’t tell me you have never heard of anyone born with more or less than two arms or legs. We have no idea as to what a human is. Perhaps we will one day.

First, “pick” isn’t necessarily the right word. “Trannies” definitely isn’t the right word. And some transgender people also identify as non-binary, meaning they literally don’t pick from two traditional gender identities.

Asking this question is just your admission of ignorance despite having an internet full of answers you could research. Your ability to type the question here is the same as the ability to type the question into a search engine.
