Look, We Have A Slogan Too!

from the copycopycatcat dept

A week after Intel changed its logo and branding to reflect how it’s changing as a company, chief rival AMD says it plans to mimic the Intel Inside campaign by slapping AMD LIVE!” on the outside of computers to try and raise its brand awareness among consumers. It’s hard to see this as much more than a me-too effort, and it’s also hard to see it being as successful as Intel’s efforts without the marketing money Intel gives to computer makers for advertisements that feature its logo and/or trademark sound — a central aspect of AMD’s antitrust suit against Intel. AMD’s chips have a reputation among many people as being technically superior to Intel’s offerings, and the way for it to succeed is to stimulate demand for its products among end users, who will then demand computers that use them from manufacturers. But aping its rival’s wildly successful marketing campaign with stickers on the outside of computers and a random slogan doesn’t seem to be the best idea to do that.

That’s exactly what the stickers can do. Usually you see a computer with an AMD chip and have no idea that AMD is in there. Now when you’re over at your uber-computer-geek-friend’s house and his computer is so much cooler than yours, it’ll have a little AMD sticker on the outside so any non-geek can know a little more about why it’s so cool. Then when they go to the manufacturer for their next computer they will be demanding AMD.

Might have a positive cost-benefit analysis

If the price of the campaign is low enough, even a marginal improvement in name-reocngition is probably enough to make it positive overall. I can tell you that my mom knows only the Intel name and wouldn’t buy a computer without the silly Intel sticker. If she sees the AMD sticker often enough maybe she’d consider them as well.
I agree that AMD is unlikely to take over the world using their new slogan/stickers, but end-users really are under-informed about AMD’s offerings.

The Intel Inside slogan isn’t the only reason Intel dominated for so long, and the new AMD slogan won’t by itself bring about a paradigm change in chipsets, but it’s a combination of the little things like this that will eventually move AMD up.

Maybe AMD needs to hire a Green Man Group to start making commercials for them too.

AMD often plays the “me too” card on ideas that Intel has invented or popularized. They do it both in technical and marketing. Sometimes AMD does it better, sometimes not as well. Back in the days when Intel “owned” the PC market, AMD didn’t have much of a choice about their strategy. They had to follow Intel’ lead. Now that AMD is a big enough player, they really should look at changing their strategy(the technical side has for the most part).
