WISPs O' WiMax

While most there’s been a lot of attention lately about WISPs launching WiMax, most of it has just been on the overly hyped fact that WiMax was coming… The problem, of course, is that none of these offerings actually are WiMax. They’re all pre-standard equipment that is planned to be upgraded to WiMax, when available. However, that doesn’t mean the announcements aren’t still interesting, and Wireless Watch has done a quick analysis of three of the independent players who are talking up their pre-WiMax deployments. What’s most interesting is that they all really seem focused on 802.16e — the mobile version of WiMax. This makes sense, as WiMax really isn’t much until they get mobility (since mobility is really what makes wireless compelling for end users). However, the problem is that 802.16e still has a long way to go and there’s a clear effort by some companies to stop WiMax from ever becoming mobile. What that means is that any company waiting around for mobile WiMax is going to be waiting for a while. Any customers waiting for mobile WiMax might be better off looking elsewhere for the time being.
