How To Make Stolen Cars Disappear: Replace Everything
from the they-still-got-caught dept
Police in Dubai have arrested a group of “high tech” car thieves who had them baffled for quite some time. The problem was that the stolen cars seemed to disappear completely. Once the cars were stolen, they were never turning up again anywhere. The trick, apparently, was that the thieves had bought previously totaled cars of the same model abroad. Then, they swapped out the car’s computer systems and any identifying information with the totaled cars — even to the point that the ignition keys from the totaled cars were used in the stolen ones. Then, the cars had every appearance of being the cars that had been bought from abroad, rather than the ones that were stolen. Some of these details seem a bit strange, however, so it might be interesting to see some additional reporting on this story.

Dubai car thieves not so original
Car thieves in the US have been doing this for years. They’ll change all the VIN numbers and everything easily identifiable.
