China Going To Take The Wait And See Approach On 3G

Confirming earlier reports that China was in no rush to pick a 3G standard, comes this report that China has no plans to issue any 3G licenses until at least 2005. While they’ve done some lab tests, they now want to conduct field tests as well, and believe it will take another year. Basically, the rumor is that (as many expected) the tests showed that TD-SCDMA isn’t particularly good when compared to CDMA2000 or W-CDMA. If that’s the case, then it certainly is better than rushing in and getting stuck with bad technology. Of course, waiting too long doesn’t help anyone either – but it seems like most of the world is slowing down their plans for 3G deployments, so they might not be too far behind no matter what technology they decide to go with.
