Martin Cooper On The Holy Hype Around 3G
While he’s a bit biased, here’s a good interview with Martin Cooper, credited as the inventor of the mobile phone, talking about how the wireless industry has consistently failed with 3G, and how they’re guilty of overhyping what the technology can do. Of course, he says that it is possible to do what the wireless carriers are claiming, but it requires additional technology – such as the technology provided by his company, ArrayComm. He points out that, despite everything the carriers have been saying, their networks were still designed for voice, and they still haven’t really figured out the business model for data services. While what he says definitely was true a year ago, there have been some signs more recently that a few (just a few) carriers are beginning to understand the power of data – but he’s right that it will take a while for them to get anywhere near its potential.
