Sprint PCS Launches WiFi

We had this story a couple weeks back, but now it’s official. Just as predicted, Sprint (just like everyone else) is going to offer users the ability to connect to Wayport’s WiFi hotspots – for a higher price than Wayport offers alone. There are also a few other hotspots, and more will be added later. But, for now, it’s really yet another way you can access Wayport. The pricing is dreadful, and already, in the launch, they’re offering $3 off on the $10/day charge they want. I doubt they’ll ever actually charge that $10 fee. The article claims that they’re offering some software you need to download first – meaning that you need to know that you’re going to use Sprint’s WiFi and download the software before you hit the hotspot. It’s unclear what benefit the software provides (besides forcing Sprint branding on you). It does let people “roam” between 1x and WiFi networks, but it’s unclear how many folks outside of early adopters will be interested in that. Also no indication if the software does anything to help secure the data you’re sending over WiFi.
