The Uncrashable Jet

from the sounds-good dept

After the September 11th tragedy, there was all sorts of talk about ways to prevent something like that from happening again. One of the suggestions was building a system into planes that simply wouldn’t let them crash into buildings. Now, Airbus and Honeywell have designed just such an anti-crash system for aircraft. It’s an autopilot system that would take control of the plane to prevent them from hitting obstacles. Of course, before it can be used, regulators need to be convinced that it really works, and pilots will need to be convinced that this doesn’t take away from their authority in the cockpit.
