Tech Giants Launch Phone Alliance

Trying to prevent a situation in the mobile phone market where every company pays a “tax” to certain suppliers, Texas Instruments and some other mobile phone companies (including STMicro, Nokia and ARM) have launched the Mobile Industry Processor Alliance to try to promote open standards. This is clearly yet another attempt to try to route around Qualcomm’s hold on the market (though, it’s also seen as a way to hold off Microsoft). It will be interesting to see if this actually does anything other than make some noise. TI is hardly a disinterested party, having been sued by Qualcomm late last week for intellectual property infringement.
