Fantasy Games Not Just For Maladjusted Teen Geeks
from the but-still-overwhelmingly-male dept
A psychologist who was also a big fan of online games decided it was time to really look into what sort of people play online games. It sounds like online games are definitely passing from a niche market to the mainstream. It’s true that the overwhelming majority (85%) were male, but they weren’t necessarily kids any more. About 15% of players pick a gender different from their real life gender. The study also found that about a quarter of all online players spend more than 40 hours a week playing such games – though, they don’t see this as unhealthy at all (assuming it isn’t interfering with other aspects of their life). Of course, reading the “conclusions” of the study make it sound like someone is trying to justify their own gaming obsession as being “normal”.

So we have a crowd of wannabes who play the role of hunks or bikini babes with swords. When will we see fantasy games about being a nerd in coke bottle glasses sitting in front of a computer all day?
