The Meaning Of Computers And Chess

from the thinking-machines dept

dsg writes in with a link to a good article looking at recent human-computer chess matches and what they “mean”. It goes through the very basics of how computer chess programs work, and why Deep Junior (the computer program that Kasparov just played) performed almost as well as Deep Blue (the computer program that beat Kasparov a few years back), despite only have a small fraction of its processing power. Finally, it looks at what computer chess means for artificial intelligence, though, the article seems to assume that the Turing Test is still the standard measure of a successful AI system – something that many AI researchers would disagree with.
