Mobile Devices Prove To Be Unpopular For Web Access

A new study shows that Europeans, despite their widespread adoption of mobile phones, aren’t using htose phones to access the internet. I’m not sure that this is surprising or (more important) indicative of anything worthwhile. Right now, the problem is that the choices for accessing the web via mobile device right now are dreadful. There aren’t many devices that work well for such things, and the associated services are just as bad. Furthermore, many users’ initial experiences with overhyped WAP as a way to “access the web” from a mobile phone turned them off from the concept. Eventually, though, better devices with better service will get people back on the mobile data bandwagon. In the meantime, wireless operators in Europe will just have to remain happy that they’re getting all that SMS revenue.
