Chinese Patent for Text Messaging

While text messaging has been huge in Asia, it’s been slowed somewhat in China by the difficulty in entering Chinese characters into mobile phones. The NY Times is reporting that a company has received a Chinese patent on a way to enter Chinese characters with much greater ease using a regular phone keypad. I don’t know enough about how Chinese characters work to understand the details, but it certainly sounds interesting. As the article points out, though, the patent may be worthless. If the system is any good – others will figure out ways to copy it.
