Flogging On A Blog

from the ugh dept

Newsweek is running a story about how marketers for Dr. Pepper are bribing certain (unnamed) bloggers with free gifts in order to get them to promote their new drink on their blogs. Marketing and PR people certainly have been trying to figure out how to use blogs (in a good way) for some time now, but this move by Dr. Pepper doesn’t seem like the greatest of ideas. Blogs are better at finding this sort of information and widely disseminating it (thus, reducing the credibility of those who are among the “bribed”). So overtly trying to co-opt blogs that are believed to be indepedent only seems likely to fail.
