Science Fiction And Smart Mobs
from the it-all-comes-together dept
While saying that most science fiction writers these days are focusing on scary dystopian futures that don’t offer any “compelling vision of what a better society might look like”, there are still some examples of people taking current technology trends and pushing them forward to see what impact they might have on society. As an example, he looks at the Global Frequency comic and sees how it takes the ideas of Howard Rheingold’s Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution and pushes them forward to see where it might lead. Good science fiction takes things that are happening today and makes you think about the possibilities of tomorrow. Of course, some might claim that the other dystopian science fiction writers really are doing just that. They just see the negative impact of all this new technology outweighing the positive.
