Video Games That Never End
from the cool dept
A fascinating article about some work being done in the artificial intelligence world to make video games that just keep on going. The idea is to allow players to have more freedom to go off and explore, rather than be limited by the story line that most games present – which don’t lead to many options for variations. Of course, a game without any story line can get to be quite boring, so the idea here is to build a story around what the characters do. The game continually takes the player’s actions into account. Kill a potential ally early on and, it can come back to haunt you later on. I’m sure it’s still a ways off from being really playable, but it certainly sounds like a great development.

These types of games are already appearing...
Recent classics like the Grand Theft Auto series and Morrowind already give the player the freedom to do whatever they please. The “game on rails” approach is fast fading away, to be replaced with truly interactive, learning environments with memory.
