Ta-Ta TiVo

from the going-nowhere-fast dept

Red Herring is predicting that the “first-movers” in the PVR world, TiVo and ReplayTV aren’t going to survive the coming ubiquity of PVRs. This isn’t a “good” ubiquity where the companies make some money on every device. It’s a bad ubiquity where almost every consumer electronics company (and many computer companies) are making an end run around both companies by offering their own PVR functionality in their boxes. While both TiVo and ReplayTV have tried to license their technology, they haven’t found many takers. In the end, the only thing they might have of value is their names. This is especially true with TiVo, which has practically become the generic name for any PVR device, no matter what the actual brand is.
