T-Mobile To Launch 3G In 200 Cities

We’ll see numerous 3G announcements this year like this one by T-Mobile announcing that they will have 3G up in 200 cities in Q3. But I’m not sure if this is really good news. Many of these roll outs, including the T-Mobile one, are actually part of the 3G license terms. Carriers have to launch services in the licensed spectrum on a prescribed timeline. While this guarantees that carriers use the licenses as they are intended the downside is that the services are launched before the technology is ready. It is well known that WCDMA technology is not quite ready for prime time. For example, where is Hutchison’s much hyped 3G network? This could eventually lead to poor consumer adoption and increased costs for everyone.
