Official Wi-Flying
from the find-those-hotspots dept
There have been a few examples of people “WiFlying” or “war flying” before. This is when people go up in an airplane with a WiFi enabled notebook computer and map all the open access points. However, historically, this is done by hobbyists. It’s therefore, a bit surprising to find out that Utah’s Chief Information Officer is making a practice of WiFlying. He took a couple different trips (so that all his kids could fly with him) and mapped out a bunch of open networks. He admits that he probably missed some by flying too fast, and wishes he could do it again with a helicopter. In the meantime, though, he’s buildinga Pringles-can antenna to link up with his neighbor. These, of course, are standard techie practices, but surprising (in a good way) from Utah’s CIO.

This guy also has installed Userland Radio on a bunch of PC’s and is encouraging behind the firewall blogging as low cost knowledgement management experiment. Pretty cutting edge guy – not what you expect as CIO the most conservative state in the Union!
