US Carriers Just Can't Catch A Data Break

As we reported earlier Verizon has indefinitely delayed plans for their 3G data-only network due to the lackluster take up of 2.5G service. On the heels of that announcement SprintPCS said that they expect a slow recovery through Q4 partly due to slower than expected adoption of their 2.5G service. In general all carriers’ plan are being impacted by the slow US economy and saturated wireless market. Just as much an issue though is carriers ongoing battle to get consumers to pay per packet for wireless data. For handset services like games, MMS and ringtone, they should make access flat rate and charge per game, message or ringtone. On the laptop side, carriers need to go to a reasonable flat-rate and focus on getting subscribers to increase their montly ARPU. Right now they aren’t getting any benefit from the networks.
