Mitch Kapor Working On Open Source Outlook Competitor
from the NPR-style-plans dept
Dan Gillmor’s latest column talks about plans from Mitch Kapor to create an open source competitor to Microsoft Outlook, complete with email client, PIM, and calendar. The more interesting thing about the plan is that he’s backing it via a non-profit foundation, and likens it to the public radio method of staying in business. They’re going to look for sponsors and contributions from outsiders. Should be interesting to see how well this goes over – but I get the sense that the folks up in Redmond aren’t being kept up at night afraid of a model based on public radio funding. If I ever open my email program one day to find that I can’t use it for the next 24 hours due to a “fundraising drive”, I don’t think I would be a happy camper.
