Vice Squads Go Virtual

from the online-prostitution dept

The idea of people selling sex online is nothing new (in fact, we’ve covered it twice before. However, the police are trying to crack down on the practice. The last in MSNBC’s series on online dating really has nothing to do with online dating. It’s about how the police are going after prostitutes online. There’s a weak attempt at tying this to online dating by saying that sometimes prostitutes try to find customers via online dating sites using special “code words”, but most people don’t think that’s as big a deal as specific “escort sites” that more openly offer up sex for money. The article starts with the story of a site that was brought to court over this and ordered to shut down. However, the company has simply ignored the order, and no one seems to be able to do anything about it. I’m not sure why this is, or why the operators of the site haven’t been thrown in jail.
