Mozilla As The Platform

from the where-have-we-heard-that-before dept

I remember in 1996 or so all the discussions about how Netscape was no longer a browser and was now becoming a “platform” that would take on Windows (not just IE). Now it seems some are (finally) seeing Mozilla take on that challenge. The article points out that there’s basically no reason to use Netscape over Mozilla, since it’s based on the same code, but dumbed down and coated in AOLness. However, they say that quietly, lots of people are programming applications for Mozilla that push it far beyond what people think of as a “normal” browser.
