Pentagon Compromises on Spectrum
Well it looks like we’ll finally have our own 3G spectrum auctions. The Pentagon will give up two chunks of spectrum that will be made available to wireless carriers. The sprectum will be vacated by the end of 2008. In addition to supporting 3G services, the new spectrum matches the frequencies used in other countries. That will allow single-band phones with international roaming capablities, which is new in the US. Today international roaming into or out of the US requires dual or tri-band phones.Update: The new spectrum could go to auction as early as 2004. But it will not be ready for use till 2008.
