China Claims Third Place In The Internet Race

from the but,-there's-nothing-to-see-here dept

For a country that works so hard to block out so much of the internet, it’s a bit surprising how proud China is to have the 3rd highest number of people accessing the internet (after the US and Japan). In their rush to shut out such dangerous sites as CNN and to shut down internet cafes at an alarming rate, you would think they’d be happier with a lower internet usage rate. Besides, the absolute number of people accessing the internet doesn’t say much when you have the largest population in the world. The more interesting number is the percentage of people in the country with internet access, and that seems to be very low in China (45 million out of 1.26 billion).
