Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). Quite a mouthful, isn’t it? OFDM is a new technolgy that is supposedly faster and less expensive than the 3G technologies that mobile operators are currently betting on. Carriers are certainly intrigued by the promise of OFDM, but if only a handful of carriers select it, those carrier and their customers won’t be able to benefit from the economies of scale achieved by the dominant industry standards. Just look at how all the US TDMA carriers are transitioning to GSM.
