To help spur sales of their 3G services, next month DoCoMo will let 3G subscriber share one phone number between a 3G phone and an 2G i-mode phone. This way users are covered through out Japan, as long as they have their i-mode phone when they travel outside of 3G coverage. This seems not only inelegant but also a disincentive to subscribe to 3G. How useful can the service be if you have to carry two phones? Of course knowing the Japanese, they’ll relish the idea of carrying around another device.
