New Apps Needed for GPRS

Poor GPRS, it’s the new WAP. Wireless analyts have moved on from “WAP is Crap” to all out GPRS bashing. The latest basher is Gartner which believes that GPRS is a niche technology that only works for a handful of apps, not “mainstream” apps. We’re not sure what they mean by “mainstream” but we suspect they are talking about real internet access and streaming media. They imply that GPRS is good for “short, bursty transactions.” By that we suspect they mean it’s good for WAP and that’s all. If there are unique applications for GPRS no one knows what they are. Hey, what about MMS?
