Users Of Dead Online Storage Sites Out Of Luck

from the too-bad dept

I’ve complained in the past about what PhotoPoint did to their customers (people were paying $20/year to store their photos, and suddenly the company shut down with no warning – only to come back a few months later asking for a one time payment of $25 to get their photos back). Here’s an article saying that there really aren’t any laws protecting customers against such a thing. For the most part, they’re just out of luck. While I can understand this when it comes to free sites, I do wonder about the people who had paid money to PhotoPoint – and then were being asked for more money to get their photos back. I know that many ASPs that provide services for businesses have escrow agreements for just this reason. Perhaps individuals will start demanding that of online services as well.
