Lessig: Disney Shows What's Wrong With Copyrights

from the hurting-innovation dept

Here’s a summary of Lawrence Lessig’s talk at SXSW last month where he says that Disney’s continued extension of copyright law is harmful to innovation. Basically, he says that copyright should protect the artists who create something – but not stifle innovation from others. By continually extending copyright laws, and making them more powerful it sets up ridiculous situations – such as a PBS documentary that couldn’t be shown because of huge licensing fees required for 2 seconds of The Simpsons that appeared on a television screen during the documentary.
