Jack Valenti Responds To Lawrence Lessig

from the fight!-fight!-fight! dept

Jack Valenti, the head of the Motion Picture Association of America, has written a response to Lawrence Lessig who has said that the entertainment industry is slowing the adoption of broadband, holding back internet distribution, and stifling innovation. Valenti says pretty much what you’d expect him to say. He completely glosses over the real issues of the DMCA by saying that obviously we need to protect any copy-protection scheme – which of course misses the whole point of allowing people to point out where the copy protection scheme is weak. I believe that Valenti actually believes what he’s saying, and thinks his viewpoint is the best for the motion picture industry, but he’s being short sighted. The movie industry has the opportunity to lead and do something new and creative (and potentially very rewarding), and instead they’re trying to throw people in jail.
